Thornton Dial's Exhibit, Hard Truths, was very powerful. His assembled pieces ranged from stand alone sculptural works to three dimensional "paintings" that incorporated everyday objects to represent his point of view. The show was a commentary on everything from Princess Diana to Martin Luther King to the Mercedes plant that was moving into his state. I found his work very moving. I wasn't able to photograph any of the pieces in the show, but the two pieces below were owned by NOMA so they allowed me to photograph them. This is one of his early works and there is quite a difference between this piece and his later work. Only in New Orleans 04/25/2012
These bikes demanded that I stop and take their picture. I love the fringe and glitter. Maybe I'll trick out my own bike this way... Works in progress 03/31/2012
This platter will be "animated" with a pig face and tail. It's quite large. I have already attached the pig snout and tail but I don't have a picture of it. I'm not sure if it will have the look that I was going for but it is drying slowly and I'm hoping that there will be no cracks or warping. I'm trying something new here. Working with slabs is very interesting; I like the aspect of building something. This figure is called Fierce. Very different from my first realistic piece, but I'm really enjoying exploring ideas with clay. My fish platters have encouraged me to continue painting underglazes on the clay. This one is more of a sketch than a finished idea. I think there will be a second edition. Third Friday in Millville 03/21/2012
