Thornton Dial's Exhibit, Hard Truths, was very powerful. His assembled pieces ranged from stand alone sculptural works to three dimensional "paintings" that incorporated everyday objects to represent his point of view. The show was a commentary on everything from Princess Diana to Martin Luther King to the Mercedes plant that was moving into his state. I found his work very moving. I wasn't able to photograph any of the pieces in the show, but the two pieces below were owned by NOMA so they allowed me to photograph them. This is one of his early works and there is quite a difference between this piece and his later work. |
