I dropped off some paintings today at the African American Heritage Museum's new space in the Arts Garage in Atlantic City. My good friend and museum director, Ralph Hunter, showed me around and told me about his plans. The gallery and store space is totally bare now, but with a little sweat and a lot of magic, the grand opening and artist reception will take place on November 25th.

Chris Staley came to Clay College today to demonstrate how he makes his beautiful pots. He told us that everything an artist makes is a metaphor. He advised us to notice what we notice and what we like because what we like is what we will express in our work. The day was full of quotations, advice and stories while his hands were busy making pots. On Saturday Doug Herren demonstrated his slab building techniques in a workshop that is part of the "Power of Clay" series. Doug's work is on display in the gallery for the month of November. Next week: Chris Staley. The bright colors on Doug's hand built creations were achieved with sign paint. I'm so glad I had a chance to see how he worked with the clay. |
